Katowice – tourist attractions and interesting places. City guide

The Culture Zone was built on the site of a former mine and is now the region’s main attraction. Here you’ll find the headquarters of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR) and the Silesian Museum, with exhibitions hidden underground. Be sure to visit the observation deck above the International Congress Center (Zielona Dolina) to take in the city’s panoramic view. The complex is crowned by Spodek - the city’s most recognizable building. With its futuristic shape resembling a flying saucer, this sports and entertainment arena has been attracting architecture enthusiasts for years.

The Market Square is the heart of the city. Here you’ll see numerous trams passing right by the relaxation area with palm trees and a man-made channel of the Rawa River. You’ll also find the historic building of the Silesian Theater and the Press House. Within a 10-minute walk, you’ll find dozens of restaurants and cafes. It’s a great starting point for a walk - in just a few minutes, you can reach the most important spots in the city center.

Nikiszowiec and its mining history

Nikiszowiec is a place where time has stood still. Here you’ll see unique red-brick apartment blocks with characteristic red window frames (known as “futryny”). Stroll through the narrow streets, visit local art studios, and check out the branch of the Katowice History Museum in the former laundry building. This place has a unique atmosphere that sets it apart from the rest of the country.

If you need a break, head to Silesian Park, located on the border of Katowice, Siemianowice Sląskie, and Chorzow. Spanning over 535 hectares, the park features Poland’s oldest planetarium, a zoo, and the “Elka” cable car. A ride along the paths will let you see the area from above. It’s a great spot for both an active workout and a peaceful stroll among sculptures and fountains.

Katowice is alive with music all year round. You can attend a concert at the NOSPR concert hall, which boasts some of the best acoustics in the world, or come to one of the city’s famous festivals, such as the OFF Festival or Tauron Nowa Muzyka. With such a rich cultural scene, you’re sure to find an event that interests you no matter the season.

In the center of Katowice, you have a choice of over 50 restaurants within a 15-minute walk of the Market Square. You can enjoy a traditional pork roll with red cabbage or opt for street food. The city is famous for its hospitality and the high quality of its cuisine. In the evening, check out the spots on Mariacka Street, which are bustling with life until late at night. It’s a great place to end the day on a high note.
